Standing among the flooded ruins of his house, 5-year-old Bhargav asks his mother for some food, any food. She looks at his father in sheer despair. There is no food, no fresh water, no electricity and no medical help. Most houses have been destroyed or badly damaged. All they see around them is salt water and mud. Over 50,000 unfortunate victims of Remal Cyclone need urgent help!
This is the current situation in North and South 24 Parganas Districts of West Bengal, India in the wake of the path of destruction left by Cyclone Remal on May 26 and 27, 2024. Tens of thousands have been rendered homeless. There are clear signs of an impending famine. In these low-lying areas of Sundarbans marshlands, the next few months will witness a sheer struggle for human survival.
The risk of communicable diseases and epidemics is real in these medically underserved areas.
Most, if not all, residents of this area belong to the lowest socioeconomic strata. Living in squalid and impoverished conditions, they are vulnerable to any disruption in weather pattern and food supply.
Since the local residents are primarily subsistence farmers, their misery is going to last for a while. This is because salt water flooding of the fields has rendered them unusable for cultivation for at least a year.
The crisis-affected area is much wider. We want to take this humanitarian initiative to every affected village.
In addition to food, many families do not have a roof over their heads and will need help to have at least a plastic sheet to protect them from the relentless sun and monsoon rains.
Hygiene kits. clothing help, medical help and continuing essential food support will be needed.
Dharmansh Foundation is requesting every kind-hearted individual/organization to contribute in this noble and urgent intervention.
Time is of the essence in this project. Let us join hands and give hope to these unfortunate souls caught in a vicious cycle of hand-to-mouth existence, natural disasters, famine and death.
There is still hope, if only you help. You have the power to prevent human suffering, morbidity and mortality.
